About the Event

Curious Body is a 2-hour workshop facilitated by Kimberley McIntyre, a dance and movement artist, teacher and performer based in regional NSW.

In this workshop, Kimberley will invite you to drop into your moving body, researching new ways of paying attention to the impulses that are occurring. Through this movement research, the aim is to have an original experience of yourself as a mover. You will play with dynamics and qualities in solo, and through partner and group work we explore initiation, response, touch and shared inquiry.

You don't need a background in dance to attend. Simply an interest in movement and an idea of the Curious Body process which is expanded on below.

"I've had many wonderful teachers over my career and it's the love they have shared through their passion for dance and martial arts that I have received and developed. Curious Body is my own way of practicing and keeping my dancing self alive. Curious Body also enriches my ideas as a dance maker, so it is a great space for professional dancers to move and gain insights, alongside community movers."        ~ Kimberley McIntyre

The Curious Body process

Curious Body is the practice of paying attention, moment to moment, while moving.

By taking the time to drop into this state of embodied awareness, creativity unfolds and we can be present with it, responding, following, and witnessing, even while doing. This is the Curious Body experience, where the body and mind are totally invested in the act of sensing all that is occurring. Indulging the imagination, engaging with visceral effort, and doing it all with unwavering, curious attention.

When we drop into this practice and find flow, we move beyond thoughts, to a state of joy and creativity. This is the solo practice of Curious Body. From here, in the company of others, we start taking from the room. Responding through the senses to the energy and moving ideas that are building. This state of play arises and feeds our solo play.

Guiding this practice through verbal cues, reminders are offered about parts of the body in connection to other parts. Gentle questions of quality and noticings around sensing are given to pique the developing interest in the room. Using these as much as needed, we continue on the journey, bringing our own sense of self to the practice and dropping deeper into the process.

The session continues with partner exercises, involving the presence of a witness, or touch, in order to move into a deeper creative state. Curious Body is all about noticing and play, and play happens when we are comfortable, open and dropped in.

Skills around articulating our experience will be explored before moving into composition awareness, allowing the room to come alive with the magic of spontaneous choreography, with awareness of time and space and the myriad of things that occur when we improvise with others.

Let's be Curious together. We are here to evolve as humans and as dancing humans, we love to move.

When we leave the session, we are changed, seeing and sensing the world from this new place of dropped and open awareness. It is so much fun!

What to bring and wear

Please wear clothing that you are comfortable moving in, a drink bottle and towel.

You will need to leave your shoes at the door before entering the hall for this workshop.
