Join me in the 1,080 Sun Salutation Challenge

Writer: Leah CooperLeah Cooper

Sponsor me, support the Bob Brown Foundation, and help protect Takayna

From 1 March to 23 March, I will be taking on the challenge to complete 1,080 Sun Salutations. I'm taking on this challenge as way to raise awareness of the work of the Bob Brown Foundation and the work they are doing in Tasmania to protect Takayna (the Tarkine wilderness). Plus, I'm hoping you will sponsor me to complete this immense number of sun salutations and help me get to Tassie in April so I can participate in the work that the Bob Brown Foundation is doing!

You may be wondering, who is Bob Brown and what does this foundation do?

Bob Brown is an environmentalist, medical doctor and former politician. In the 1970s and 80s he was instrumental in founding the Tasmanian Wilderness Society and was a leader in the campaign to prevent the construction of the Franklin Dam. More recently he was a senator and the parliamentary leader of the Australian Greens. However he resigned from politics in June 2012, and shortly after, the Bob Brown Foundation was started.

The Bob Brown Foundation runs campaigns for the protection of the natural environment. One of their main campaigns is to protect 495,000 hectares of Tasmania's Tarkine wilderness as World Heritage listed National Park. Takyana is one of the last undisturbed tracts of ancient rainforest in the world and is facing threats from extractive industries such as logging and mining.

Why this is important to me

I've always been passionate about the environment and concerned about the effect that humans are having on our planet. At this point in my life, I feel it is imperative that I stand up and do something about it. Bob Brown has been an important role model for me and the Foundation he has established aligns with my values. By supporting the work they do, I feel I am making a meaningful contribution in helping save our planet from further destruction.

How you can support me and the Bob Brown Foundation

I’m aiming to raise $2,500 to support the Bob Brown Foundation and to help fund my trip to Takayna in April, where I’ll stand alongside others helping to protect this incredible place.

What are Sun Salutations?

Sun Salutations, or the Surya Namaskar in Sanskrit, is a series of connected yoga postures, done in conjunction with the breath. Performing Sun Salutations is a physically demanding practice as the body moves from standing to forward fold, downward facing dog, low lunge, plank, cobra, back to downward facing dog, low lunge, forward fold and then to standing.

The time it takes to complete 108 Sun Salutations is approximately 90 minutes, and will depend on the speed of the practice and whether short breaks are taken at various stages throughout.

Why This Matters

This isn’t just about a physical challenge—it’s about taking a stand. Takayna is a breathtaking, ancient wilderness under threat, and we have the power to protect it. Let’s do something meaningful together!

Every bit of support—big or small—makes a difference. To donate or sponsor me, click on the Support Me button below.
