Episode 16: Reclaiming the Restorative Customs of Postnatal Recovery with Sophie Messager - Doula, Healer Perinatal Educator
In this episode, I interview Dr Sophie Messager, a biology research scientist who left her career behind to dedicate herself to the profession of doula and perinatal educator. Since 2010, Sophie has supported over a thousand families and trained well over 1000 birth workers in various workshops and online trainings. She is also a doula mentor and has taught doula preparation courses in 2018 and 2019. More recently she has written a thoroughly researched book titled Why Postnatal Recover Matters. This book, along with her online course of the same title, has helped women around the world prepare themselves for a postnatal recovery that is supportive and nourishing. In this podcast, she shares her insights and wisdom with us, including:
the catalyst that led her to change careers and become a doula
insights into the cultural background of postnatal recovery and why we need to reclaim these customs
an explanation of the four pillars of postnatal recovery and why they are important
the benefits of body work after birth and why wrapping is an excellent support for postnatal recovery
why a postnatal recovery plan is essential, and even more so in the aftermath of stillbirth or miscarriage
the role of the doula during birth and recovery
the one big thing that has helped her improve wellness and get more out of life.
